BESC Assembly of Nations 2019
September 2019
After organising one of the second largest conferences, The Bhawanipur Education Society College came back with its fourth inter college edition of BESC Assembly of Nations on the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th of September, 2019, but this time bigger and better with its motto as #ResolvetoEvolve.
BESC AON 2019 brought in a completely different approach to the concept of awards in any Model United Nations conference. Partnerships and collaborations with PETA, Amnesty International, Smile Foundation, Child Rights and You, Hope Foundation Kolkata and Kripa Foundation, gave winning participants letter of recommendations and internship opportunities in these organisations.
United Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan helped in upholding the values of the conference as a tradition. MUN societies such as SOAMUN, CBS AON, Ravenshaw University Model United Nations, IIFT IDC, BITSMUN, SRM MUN brought in delegates from all over the South Asian region.
Following its tradition of a Day 0 concept, BESC AON 2019 introduced its Day 0 to the enthusiastic participants with a key note speaker session by Tibetian nationalist and activist Mr. Tenzin Tsundue, on the beautiful and precious moments he spent in Tibet and how hard it is for him to not be able to go back home.
With 400+ participants coming from different esteemed institutions all over the country, the college witnessed furious debates in committees such as:
- The Lok Sabha to discuss the implementation of the Draft National Education Policy and widening the scope of the Anti-Lynching Law.
- The United Nations General Assembly – First Committee – Disarmament and International Security assess the risks of the new emerging weapons amidst the development of science and technology.
- The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime on legalising recreational and medicinal drugs.
- The United Nations Human Rights Council to assess and protect human rights of people in the South Sudan conflict.
- The United Nations Commission on International Trade Law to develop laws that would help in effective trade.
- The Conference of Parties of the Bonn Convention to protect endangered migratory species.
- The International Press with a team of reporters and to cover the conference in pictures and articles.
In order to promote the concept of #ResolvetoEvolve, the United Nations Security Council was simulated as a workshop to help delegates understand how countries negotiate in real life scenarios with India’s most esteemed munner Rudraneel Chattopadhyay as the President of that Council. The committee also unilaterally decided to donate the cash prize pool to the UNHCR for helping refugees and migrants.
It also followed the tradition of ending its night with laughter and joy brought to the delegates by Vaibhav Sethia, Stand-up Comedian, Writer, Story teller.
As famously quoted, an end signals a new beginning.
AON’19 therefore came to an end but was now the beginning of new memories, friendships, learning and understanding. Overall, the success could be measured in the smiles of our audience and their expectations being met in three days where innumerable amount of learning and camaraderie was shared.
