BESC Assembly of Nations 2019

After organising one of the second largest conferences, The Bhawanipur Education Society College came back with its fourth inter college edition of BESC Assembly of Nations on the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th of September, 2019, but this time bigger and better with its motto as #ResolvetoEvolve.

BESC AON 2019 brought in a completely different approach to the concept of awards in any Model United Nations conference. Partnerships and collaborations with PETA, Amnesty International, Smile Foundation, Child Rights and You, Hope Foundation Kolkata and Kripa Foundation, gave winning participants letter of recommendations and internship opportunities in these organisations.

United Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan helped in upholding the values of the conference as a tradition. MUN societies such as SOAMUN, CBS AON, Ravenshaw University Model United Nations, IIFT IDC, BITSMUN, SRM MUN brought in delegates from all over the South Asian region.

Following its tradition of a Day 0 concept, BESC AON 2019 introduced its Day 0 to the enthusiastic participants with a key note speaker session by Tibetian nationalist and activist Mr. Tenzin Tsundue, on the beautiful and precious moments he spent in Tibet and how hard it is for him to not be able to go back home.

With 400+ participants coming from different esteemed institutions all over the country, the college witnessed furious debates in committees such as:

  • The Lok Sabha to discuss the implementation of the Draft National Education Policy and widening the scope of the Anti-Lynching Law.
  • The United Nations General Assembly – First Committee – Disarmament and International Security assess the risks of the new emerging weapons amidst the development of science and technology.
  • The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime on legalising recreational and medicinal drugs.
  • The United Nations Human Rights Council to assess and protect human rights of people in the South Sudan conflict.
  • The United Nations Commission on International Trade Law to develop laws that would help in effective trade.
  • The Conference of Parties of the Bonn Convention to protect endangered migratory species.
  • The International Press with a team of reporters and to cover the conference in pictures and articles.

In order to promote the concept of #ResolvetoEvolve, the United Nations Security Council was simulated as a workshop to help delegates understand how countries negotiate in real life scenarios with India’s most esteemed munner Rudraneel Chattopadhyay as the President of that Council. The committee also unilaterally decided to donate the cash prize pool to the UNHCR for helping refugees and migrants.

It also followed the tradition of ending its night with laughter and joy brought to the delegates by Vaibhav Sethia, Stand-up Comedian, Writer, Story teller.

As famously quoted, an end signals a new beginning.

AON’19 therefore came to an end but was now the beginning of new memories, friendships, learning and understanding. Overall, the success could be measured in the smiles of our audience and their expectations being met in three days where innumerable amount of learning and camaraderie was shared.

BESC Assembly of Nations 2018

September 2018

After organising one of the second largest conferences, The Bhawanipur Education Society College came back with its third inter college edition of BESC Assembly of Nations on the 7th, 8th and 9th of September, 2018, but this time with a perspective of breaking the long-standing barriers to do the right thing. Thus, came the hashtag #BreakrulesMakePeace.

BESC AON 2018 had put forth a goal of “not big but better” and aimed at not only bringing the concept of MUN to the youth society in Kolkata but also in developing the art of public speaking amongst the underprivileged children. Collaboration with the Tiljala Shed, helped in reaching out to these children were workshops and preparatory trainings were given for them to participate and give equal competition to the other participants.

United Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan and the West Bengal Federation of United Nations Association helped in upholding the values of the conference. MUN societies such as JOINMUN, Daffodil IMUN and Ravenshaw University Model United Nations brought in delegates from all over the South Asian region with AISEC connecting all of them through its global network.

Following its tradition of a Day 0 concept, BESC AON 2018 introduced its Day 0 to the enthusiastic participants with a keynote speaker session by environmental lawyer and activist Mr. Nadeem Qadri on the threats that India’s precious historical wildlife faces.

With 300+ participants coming from different esteemed institutions all over the country, the college witnessed furious debates in committees such as:

  • The All India Political Parties Meet to discuss the possibilities of simultaneous election and legalising gambling.
  • The United Nations General Assembly – First Committee – Disarmament and International Security assess the risk of nuclear danger.
  • The United Nations Framework on Climate Change Convention on framing policies in achieving article 2(b) of the convention and long-term climate financing.
  • The United Nations Security Council to discuss situation of the ongoing conflict in Yemen.
  • The United Nations Human Rights Council to promote and protect human rights in post conflict scenarios.
  • The United Nations Commission on the Status of Women to review the Millennium Development Goals and implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform of Action.
  • The International Press with a team of reporters and to cover the conference in pictures and articles.

Thus, with 6 committees and a keynote speaker session, The BESC AON 2018 ended with joy and laughter as Akash Gupta took the stage with his charming jokes and performance.

BESC Assembly of Nations 2017

September 2017

The Bhawanipur Education Society College organised its second inter-college Model United Nations Conference on the 8th, 9th, and 10th of September 2017, but this time with an aim to inspire people to speak up with its hashtag as #RisethisFall.

It became India’s second largest MUN conference that year with 11 committees and collaborations with the United Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan. MUN societies such as Dhaka University MUN Association, SMIT MUN, Patna Youth Parliament Conclave, Ranevshaw University Model United Nations, Indian Luminary MUN, BITSMUN, St. Stephens MUN, Techfest MUN of IIT Bombay and the University of Hyderabad MUN, brought in delegates from all over the south Asian region.

It also became one of the few MUN conferences to have a Day 0 concept. A day 0 is an introductory ceremony one day before the conference. BESC AON 2017 introduced its Day 0 to the enthusiastic participants with a keynote speaker session with Major General GD Bakshi on India’s military power.

With 500+ participants coming from different esteemed institutions all over the country, the college witnessed furious debates in committees such as:

  • The West Bengal Legislative Assembly with topics to be covered under the then monsoon session.
  • The United Nations General Assembly – First Committee – Disarmament and International Security to prevent the acquisition of weapons of mass destruction by violent non-state actors.
  • The United Nations General Assembly – Second Committee – Economic and Financial to discuss the role of ICTs in development and the situation of LDCs and LLDCs.
  • The United Nations General Assembly – Third Committee – Social and Humanitarian to find a method to eliminate racism, xenophobia and racial discrimination.
  • The United Nations General Assembly – Fourth Committee – Special Political and Decolonisation to discuss the sovereignty of Palestine and non-self-governing territories.
  • The United Nations General Assembly – Fifth Committee – Administrative and Budgetary to discuss the financing of peacekeeping operations.
  • The United Nations General Assembly – Sixth Committee – Legal to resolve the conflict between right to privacy and information.
  • The United Nations Security Council to discuss the monthly programme of work for September.
  • The United Nations Human Rights Council to promote reconciliation and accountability of human rights in Sri Lanka.
  • The United Nations Commission on the Status of Women to discuss the role of men in women in empowerment.
  • The United Nations News Centre with a team of reporters and photographers to cover the conference in pictures and articles.

Thus, with 11 committees and a key note speaker session, The BESC AON 2017 became one of the second largest conference that year.

BESC Assembly of Nations 2016

August 2016

The Bhawanipur Education Society College organised its first inter-college Model United Nations Conference on the 24th, 25th and 26th of August 2016. It was one of the first conferences to be organised by a college, with an aim to bring to the youth, problems and issues of the world and giving them a platform to express their opinion.

Collaborations with different NGOs and organisations such as Make a Difference and AISEC, and previously organised MUN societies such as Dhaka University MUN Association, Global Indian MUN, Gujrat Model United Nations, University of Hyderabad MUN and IEM MUN, helped in developing this platform for the enthusiastic debaters.

With the Italian Consulate General Damien Francovigh as the chief guest of the conference and over 350 participants coming from 30 different esteemed institutions, the college witnessed furious debates in committees such as:

  • The All India Political Parties Meet with an aim to reform to the electoral system in India
  • A historic Imperial Conference with a legislature for British India
  • The United Nations Security Council to ensures international peace and security in light of the growing terrorism and the situation in Mali
  • The United Nations Human Rights Council to protect human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism
  • The International Monitory Fund with an aim of analysing the Eurozone crisis and steady development in the world.
  • The International Press with a team of reporters and photographers to cover the conference in pictures and articles.

A buzzing campus of enthusiastic delegates, photographers, and reporter, representing various countries and ministers made the BESC Assembly of Nations, the heart and soul for enthusiastic debaters and policy makers committed to excellence, and responsible citizens aware of their rights and responsibilities.
